SEARCHLIGHT INSTITUTE

Brand Identity & Digital Platform

Searchlight Institute came to me as a new political research organization needing a complete brand and digital presence before their first publications launched. I built the identity from scratch, balancing the credibility required for policy audiences with accessibility for the general public—American civic iconography with a contemporary digital aesthetic. The website posed its own challenge: a small team publishing research at high volume couldn't manually curate how content surfaces across policy areas. I designed a content architecture with an intelligent tagging system that handles those connections automatically, along with data visualization standards and social templates that extend the work's reach beyond the site itself.

Development by Jonathan Hooper.

CLidef (global climate legal defense)

UX Research & Design Strategy

CliDef had grown into an established legal nonprofit operating in 20+ countries, but their brand still looked like a startup—decorative flourishes and casual iconography undermining high-stakes legal defense work. I elevated the visual identity to match their maturity: refined color palette, stronger hierarchy, aerial earth imagery, and carefully vetted field photography. Security constraints shaped the website—case details and partner names could compromise ongoing work—so I restructured around distinct user pathways with an evergreen content strategy their small team can actually maintain. The partnership extends to annual reports, presentation templates, and funder materials.

TERPENIA BIOINSUMOS

Brand Identity & Digital Platform

Terpenia is a Brazilian biotech startup with patented innovations and prestigious research backing (UNICAMP, EMBRAPA, FAPESP)—but no market presence. They needed to transform from a research entity into a credible commercial player before launching their first product line. I designed a modular brand architecture with color-coded sub-brands for each market vertical (aquaculture, pet, swine, bio-preservatives). The geometric icon system, inspired by Brazilian tiling traditions and the work of Athos Bulcão, uses quarter-circle modules that combine differently for each vertical—directly mirroring how Terpenia's base bioactive compounds combine into market-specific formulations. Stakeholder workshops mapped a site architecture serving audiences from pet owners to research scientists, with progressive disclosure for different technical depths.

Design Ethics and Practice Course

Created comprehensive course framework integrating Design Justice principles with hands-on research methodologies, culminating in collaborative publication as ethical practice. Designed course materials, workshop exercises, field trips, and collaborative publication processes while managing group dynamics across international student cohorts. Created inclusive learning environments accommodating diverse participation styles, mentoring students through field research, participatory co-design workshops, and critical examination of how design decisions impact environmental, social, and cultural equity.

World Connect

Website Redesign

This international development nonprofit's website had grown to 1,200+ pages without strategic purpose—project stories scattered across multiple locations, donation pathways competing for attention, a database overwhelming users. My discovery research revealed the core problem: the site was trying to be both comprehensive archive and fundraising brochure. I redesigned the information architecture around four clear sections with defined pathways for donors, grantees, and partners across 42 countries.

Crafts
Beyond my professional design work, I find joy and inspiration in tactile creation. These personal projects in pottery, cooking, knitting, and sewing inform my design practice through materiality, patience, and the satisfaction of making something from scratch. These pursuits remind me that good design, like good craft, requires both technical skill and intuitive understanding of materials and human needs.
